Coffee Might Reduce the Efficacy of Osteoporosis Drugs Like Fosamax

Fosamax Class Action Lawsuit ImageMany people who suffer from osteoporosis find themselves in a quandary about whether to risk the side effects of a bisphosphonate drug such as Fosamax, or find alternatives to keep their bones strong and less likely to fracture. Those who took the drug as directed and experienced the side effects associated with Fosamax, such atypical femur fractures have sued Merck, the manufacturer, for injuries they’ve sustained while taking the drug.

For those whom a bisphosphonate drug is the only viable option of treating osteoporosis, they might need to avoid drinking coffee because recent evidence suggests that the beverage can interfere with the body’s absorption of drugs like Fosamax, among others.

Taking Prescription Drugs with Coffee Can Reduce Effectiveness Up to 60%

Both the New York Times and AARP.org recently published blog entries on their Web sites referencing studies claiming patients who take a bisphosphonate drug like Fosamax with their morning cup of coffee could be reducing its effectiveness by 60 percent. The drug needs to be taken with water on an empty stomach to ensure its maximum potency. Other drugs that can be affected by coffee include antidepressants, hormone and thyroid medications. Some drugs actually increase the effects of caffeine in the body by blocking the body’s ability to metabolize it. Those drugs include some antidepressants, oral contraceptives, antibacterial drugs like Cipro and certain asthma drugs.

Patients Should Consult a Doctor or Pharmacist About Potential Interactions

For some people, avoiding drug interactions can be a balancing act, especially if they take a variety of prescription medications. The best course of action is to check with your doctor or pharmacist about potential interaction between the medicines you take, and how they should be taken. Some people may have to eliminate coffee completely, but for others, it may only be a question of whether to avoid the beverage for a certain period of time in order to keep it from interfering with your medications.

Osteoporosis Strikes During Menopause

Osteoporosis strikes many women during menopause due to the cessation of ovarian hormone production. The disorder also afflicts approximately two million men. Many affected individuals are prescribed bisphosphonate drugs such as Fosamax to combat the condition, and become susceptible to serious side effects associated with the drug. If you have been taking Fosamax for an extended period of time, and have suffered a femur fracture, it could be because of the medication.
